Turn left at orion is the number #1 first book for people starting to get interested in Astronomy. It is divided four parts, one part for each season. It lists a number of interesting objects (star clusters, nebulae, galaxies etc) and how to find them in the sky.
I really like this book as it has in depth information about how to find and observe objects in the caldwell catalog. The author used a small refractor (3"-4") from a very dark site when writing the book. This really proves the point that you see a lot with a small telescope under real dark skies. I alos use it as inspiration for astro photography, since it lists a number of not-so common objects.
